Well, a guy in my neighborhood has a 1978 x 1/9 for sale. Not running, a few dents on the outside but otherwise complete. He has a new engine for that does run but it is out of the car... now here is the kicker. He is asking $600 for it. Should I do it? Because I live in New Mexico it is not a rust bucket, but hey a mid-engined 4 banger, italian "reliability", in a lightweight strong chassis.. I may have to do it. What are your thoughts?!

just do it. Tons of fun for cheap, and they are pretty simple to work on.

Check everywhere for rust anyway. If there is none, do it.

See if you can get the motor to crank, doesn't matter if it starts. As long as it isn't seized, you're golden.

Push it around the yard to see if it shifts, it's probably light enough.

I'd pass. The X1/9 is a car that would start rusting if you spilled a Coke on it.

Only if you will work on the car.

I take up projects and never find the motivation to work on them....

YES! Nothing wrong with the reliability when it comes to the engine. Just flaws like rust and non-popping pop-up lights. If you're not planning on going to DD it: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!

I'd do it. That's not a bad price.

We've seen a about six or seven through the shop over the years for resto work, and like others have already said, all have had at least minor rust somewhere.

The price is right, but don't expect the car to be your DD. Reliability on those old Fiats isn't exactly what you would call stellar. Also, be prepared to tell some people that 'No, it isn't a damn Fiero."

Just remember that it's spelled X1/9 but pronounced "rustbucket".

Interesting fact, Albuquerque had the highest per-capita sales of X1/9s anywhere in the world. Turns out the government/contractor engineers out there loved those things when they were being made.

Hell yes do it :) I had a Fiat X1/9 for all of a couple of months before a tree fell on it, I didn't even get it on the road, and I would recommend doing that. What little driving I did was great fun, and it was surprisingly easy to work on for a compact mid-engined car.
